In order to better prepare myself for competing against the top amateurs from around the world in Kona, I knew my endurance on the run would need to improve. With this in mind, I started to research appropriate races that would provide me with the motivation I needed to focus on my run during the early part of the 2016 season.
Fortunately, after having a conversation with our Quintiles CEO Tom Pike, he invited me to participate in our Quintiles Wrightsville Beach half marathon. As our Quintiles colleagues know, Tom is a true leader and sets an excellent example for us by using the sport of running to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Participating at the Quintiles Wrightsville Beach half marathon provided the needed motivation for me to work on my run endurance. In addition to the great training at the race, it was very impressive to see the tremendous goodwill the half marathon event creates in the community for Quintiles.
I wanted to put in a good showing at the race to represent Quintiles, and ended up taking the run out way too fast to keep with the leaders. At mile 3, the eventual two winners started to joke around and have a conversation. As I was struggling to gain control of my breathing, I knew a victory was not going to be possible. I pulled back and settled into a more realistic pace. I ended up finishing in 7th overall in a time of 1:16, which was three minutes faster than my previous best at the Trenton half marathon in November 2014.
One month later in April 2016, I was able to validate this performance at the Philadelphia LOVE Run half marathon in downtown Philadelphia and Fairmont Park. Since this course was more difficult than the Wrightsville Beach course, I was happy with another 1:16 finish time and 5th overall. The race was well organized due to the fact it is run by CGI Racing. Michele and Larry Redow do a fantastic job! I can attest that CGI Racing is definitely a leading race management company offering the best half marathons and triathlons throughout the Northeastern United States. I am a big fan of the New Jersey State Triathlon, which is also run by CGI Racing.
Thanks to the Quintiles Wrightsville Beach and Philadelphia LOVE Run half marathon, I am excited to see how the improvements on the run will translate at my next triathlon that is scheduled for June 12 at Ironman 70.3 Eagleman in Cambridge, MD.
